Who Pays for Hospice?

Who pays for my hospice care services? It’s a common question we receive as a hospice care provider. Medicare Hospice Benefit pays for most direct patient hospice services, listed below, if the patient has Medicare Part A coverage. These include your loved one’s professional hospice care fees, medical equipment and medications. Those receiving hospice care can also keep receiving Medicare benefits to treat their additional health problems other than their terminal illness.

Private health insurance plans mostly pay for hospice care services as most follow the Medicare guidelines.

Most state Medicare programs pay for hospice services even though they are not required to do so. Please check with your state’s Medicare program to make sure they cover hospice services.

You may be required to pay a small, co-pay for some hospice services, medications and respite services.
